Many members of the UCLA Chemistry & Biochemistry community will be hosting interactive booths and giving engaging talks at this year’s Exploring Your Universe (EYU) at UCLA on Sunday, Nov. 3. Join us for the fun! The main events take place from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the Court of Sciences. All activities are free, and materials will be provided.

From 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM there will be a special kickoff celebration by Dean Miguel García-Garibay of the UCLA Division of Physical Sciences including a presentation of the 2024 Science and Education Pioneer Award.

Alpha Chi Sigma’s Chemistry Corner (C5) – Alpha Chi Sigma’s Chemistry Corner is a space of fun and curiosity! Students will be able to observe and experience engaging chemistry experiments while learning in the process.

Arts & Crafts with Tau Beta Pi (C9) – Come visit our booth if you want to watch bottle rockets fly + build your own film canister launcher!

ASBMB (C14) – Meet UCLA’s Student Chapter of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as we demonstrate how physical properties of proteins affect our everyday life in how we prepare food.

CNSI Technology Centers (C11) – Come explore the nano world and see the tools scientists use to manufacture and analyze nanomaterials!

ChromoChem: Colorful Chemistry (C13) – We will be demonstrating how cool color chemistry can be and explaining the scientific concepts behind what we see.

Chem Kids (C2)
This booth will highlight the connections between chemistry and the world around us. Visitors will learn about the wonders of organic chemistry, participate in interactive activities, and enjoy a few souvenirs. This booth is brought to you by the Garg Lab at UCLA, which created and teaches the UCLA “Chem Kids” summer camp.

Chemical Reactions (C10)

Exploring the Nano World! (C1) – Come learn about the ways that invisible science makes visible fun!

Extract DNA with gBSA! (B5) – Uncover the marvels of DNA! Join us for a hands-on exploration of the world of strawberry DNA. Discover the genetic make-up that tells all living things how to become what they are. Become a scientist and extract your very own strawberry DNA to take home!

Illuminating the World of Molecules (C3) – Can we wave the world? This physical chemistry booth will help you find your own answers!

Make Your Own Lava Lamp with SACNAS@UCLA (C7) – Join SACNAS at UCLA and explore the magic of chemistry by making your own colorful lava lamp! Create your own DIY masterpiece to take home.

Metals Provide the Colors of Life (C12) – Learn how metals provide the colors of life with the Shafaat Group, a bioinorganic chemistry research group at UCLA. Investigate how acidity and basicity impact color using household pH indicators like blackberries and butterfly pea. You can also make and color your own oobleck to take home and share what you learned!
