UCLA Chemistry & Biochemistry alumnus, Dr. Satya Majeti, has been honored by the American Chemical Society (ACS) with the 2014 Heroes of Chemistry Award.

Since 1996, the ACS Heroes of Chemistry program has recognized chemical scientists whose work in various fields of chemistry and chemical engineering has led to the successful innovation and development of commercial products based on chemistry. The Heroes program also highlights the vital role of industrial chemical scientists and their companies in improving human welfare through successful commercial innovations and products.

The 2014 ACS Heroes of Chemistry Award recognized Dr. Majeti’s role in the development of the Crest Pro-Health toothpaste, along with eight colleagues at the Procter and Gamble Company (P&G). Dr. Majeti’s work contributed to the creation of a single toothpaste that provides eight separate clinical benefits for oral care.

Short Biography

Dr. Satya Majeti lives in Liberty Township with his wife, Dr. Vimala Majeti, who teaches chemistry at Xavier University. They have been long term residents of the greater Cincinnati area since arriving from Los Angeles in 1970, after obtaining their Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from UCLA under the mentorship of the late Professor Christopher Foote. Dr. Majeti worked for P&G for more than 36 years in the R&D departments and contributed to many of their technologies. He is retired from P&G as Research Fellow and now provides consulting services to chemical, pharmaceutical, and consumer product industries. Both Satya and Vimala engage in philanthropy by establishing endowed scholarships in support of needy students at several universities and they contribute to many local charitable organizations. The Majetis continue to give back to UCLA through the Majeti-Alapati Fellowship for Research in Organic Chemistry. They have two grown-up sons and three grandchildren.
