The UCLA Student Members of American Chemical Society (SMACS) Chemistry Bowl Team placed in the top three at the first annual Southern California American Chemical Society (SCALACS) Chemistry Bowl.
The SCALACS Chemistry Bowl was held at Pasadena City College on Saturday, April 12, 2014. The event brought together Southern California American Chemical Society student chapters for a team competition in the areas of spectroscopy, lab bench challenges, relay obstacle course, and chemistry jeopardy.
UCLA team members included Kenny Chen, Jason Wu, Jason Chang, Katherine Sheu, Michelle Ko, Harrison Wu, and Gary Shmorgon. The team excelled in the wet-lab and written portions of the competition, placing first in events such as acid-base titration, galvanic cell battery building, organic chemistry relay race, and spectroscopy. Members of the team represented students from freshman to senior classes and various majors, including Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology at UCLA.
