Distinguished Professor Juli Feigon has been selected by UCLA’s Postdoctoral Association as one of two recipients of the 2026–27 Excellence in Postdoctoral Mentoring Award in recognition of her outstanding commitment to mentoring postdoctoral scholars.
Feigon was nominated for the award by her postdoctoral scholars and members of her research group. The award honors faculty members who make a meaningful impact on the professional development and experiences of postdoctoral researchers.
The award will be presented to Feigon at UCLA’s Postdoc Welcome Reception on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Founders’ Room at the James West Alumni Center.
Feigon is internationally recognized for her pioneering work on the structure and function of nucleic acids, particularly telomerase and ribonucleoproteins. Her research has advanced our understanding of DNA and RNA structures and their biological roles, providing important insights into genome stability and disease mechanisms.
A true trailblazer, Feigon was the first female assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry when she joined the UCLA faculty in 1985. At that time, she was also one of the very few women academics in her field worldwide. Feigon is not only recognized for her groundbreaking research but also for her exceptional dedication to nurturing and empowering students.
In 2024, Feigon established the Juli Feigon Helping Hands Award, an annual award that supports postdoctoral fellows, research staff, and graduate students who serve as primary caregivers for dependent children or other family members, helping them pursue their scientific careers.
