On April 23, 2014, the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) hosted a table at the annual Earth Day Fair organized by E3.

E3, the largest environmental organization at UCLA, is a student group whose efforts are rotted in the three E’s of sustainability: Ecology, economy, and equity. SMACS students joined E3’s annual event to promote awareness about the environmental and health implications of personal care products (PCPs) and the role of green chemistry in providing safer alternatives.

The group showed fellow Bruins and community members how to navigate and interpret the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database, which provides toxicity information on thousands of PCP brands and products. Visitors also learned how green chemistry can be used to design safer products while maintaining their desired function, and had the opportunity to try a natural moisturizing spray prepared by SMACS.
