Professor Anne Andrews discusses her trajectory, conceptualizing neurochemistry, and identifying “moon-shots” in interview with “extremophile” Nik Hawks.
In this hour-long podcast, which aired on October 24, 2019, Andrews and Hawks talk about her unconventional, multidisciplinary scientific training and how Andrews’ experiences, beginning in childhood, shaped her scientific path. Andrews intimates the use of conceptualization to understand complex chemical phenomena, yet how conceptualizations can become intrenched as oversimplified ground-truths. Andrews and Hawks consider the roles of success and failure in the pursuit of excellence and how developing gut intuition and grit contribute to breaking new ground. As UCLA professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry and Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences, and a Senior Research Scientist in the Hatos Center for Neuropharmacology, Andrews leads efforts in basic and translational research on anxiety and depression, and at the nexus of neuroscience and nanoscience. Her interdisciplinary research team focuses discovering, developing, and using in vivo neurotransmitter monitoring approaches to understand how the serotonin (and other) neurotransmitter systems encode emotionally salient information.
