Alum Professor Patrick Y-S Lam (Postdoc, ’80-84 Jung/Cram) leads symposium celebrating the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the Chan-Lam Reaction.
A Distinguished Professor at the Baruch S. Blumberg Institute and a drug discovery consultant, Lam is internationally known as the co-discoverer of the powerful copper-promoted Chan-Lam Coupling Reaction, a complementary reaction to the Nobel-prize winning Suzuki-Miyaura Coupling Reaction.
The symposium titled “Copper-Catalyzed C-Element Bond Cross-Coupling with Arylboronic Acids: Twentieth Anniversary of Chan-Lam Reaction Discovery” will take place at 8:30 am on Sunday, August 25, in Room 8, at the San Diego Convention Center, as part of the Fall 2019 ACS Meeting. Lam will give the first talk and his former postdoc advisor, UC Presidential Chair in Medicinal Chemistry, Professor Michael Jung, will give the closing talk.
Lam received his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester with Professor Louis Friedrich and was a postdoctoral fellow at UCLA in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry with Jung (1980-1982) and with the late Professor Donald Cram (1982-1984). He joined DuPont in 1984, moved to Bristol Myers Squibb in 2001, and retired in 2011 as a director. Lam’s work led to eight clinical candidates and he was the group leader/coinventor responsible for the discovery of Eliquis®/Apixaban. It is interesting that Jung consulted often with Dominic Chan during his many visits to Stine-Haskell Research Center at Dupont Crop Protection and therefore is well acquainted with both inventors of this reaction.
On August 27, 2019, at the UCLA Research Showcase and Reception in San Diego, we will toast Lam and other UCLA alumni and faculty who are being honored by the ACS. Learn more about the event here.
