Jack Bracken (Harran Group), Xin Hong (Houk Group), Hung Pham (Houk Group), and Evan Styduhar (Garg Group) have been announced as the new Foote Fellows by the Organic Faculty at UCLA.

The Foote Fellowship recognizes excellence in coursework, research, and performance on the qualifying exam for the PhD degree.  As a part of the fellowship, the students will each receive a stipend of $4,000 for the Spring quarter of 2013 and an additional $4,000 for the Fall quarter of 2013.

The Foote Graduate Fellowship in Organic Chemistry was established on the occasion of Professor Christopher S. Foote’s 70th birthday, by his former coworkers and faculty members at UCLA.  Later, Chris and his wife, Judi Smith, donated their condominium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming to UCLA to fully fund the endowment.

Chris Foote, an outstanding contributor to our department for more than 40 years, passed away in 2005.  It was a great loss for UCLA and the chemistry profession.  UCLA was fortunate to benefit from the outstanding service of Chris Foote and his wife, Judi Smith, who recently retired as the UCLA Dean and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. The Foote-Smith gift enabled the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry to recognize the most promising students in our graduate program.
