Dear Alumni and Friends,

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has a tradition of excellence and is ranked among the best in the country. The Department employs about 50 world-renowned professors and is home to 130 postdocs, 1400 undergraduates, and 350 graduate students pursuing cutting edge research in all areas of chemistry and biochemistry. For example, we synthesize complex natural products to treat cancer and make nanomaterials to address the world's energy needs. We elucidate the molecular mechanisms that regulate the decoding of genetic information and that control aging. One measure of the caliber of our research is the long list of national and international awards and accolades received by members of our faculty. Three faculty members have won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and five have been elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences.
