Congratulations to the members of the UCLA Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry community who received awards at the annual Molecular Biology Institute (MBI) retreat on Thursday, Sept. 17, at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center.
At the retreat, Distinguished Professor David Eisenberg received the Molecular Biology Interdepartmental Doctoral Program (MBIDP) First Year Curriculum Instructor Award, along with Professor Feng Guo of the Department of Biological Chemistry. The awards recognize outstanding faculty instruction and commitment to the core first-year curriculum and is based on student feedback.

Thalia Georgiou (Bouchard group) was one of two recipients of the Jules Brenner Scholars Achievement Award, which recognizes exceptional student research that demonstrates creativity, achieves significant scholarly accomplishments, and has the potential to transform or open new areas of research. The award includes a $2,000 prize for each recipient.

Peter DePaola (Schmitt group) and Aadhishre Kasat (Shafaat group) were two of three winners of the highly competitive John-Eiserling-Lengyel Teaching Excellence Award. The award is available to MBIDP doctoral students who have completed their required TA assignments and received exceptional feedback from their course instructors and students. The award includes a $5,000 prize.

Katerina Varsamis (Tinoco Valencia group) was one of three students recognized with the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award for her research, selected from among 50 posters presented at the retreat.
