Many biologically active organic molecules contain saturated oxygen and nitrogen heterocycles.  Readily available alkenes can be transformed into high value chiral saturated heterocycles through enantioselective copper-catalyzed alkene difunctionalizations. Elements of reaction discovery, design and mechanistic analysis involved in our copper catalysis program as well as application of the methods to the concise synthesis of bioactive saturated heterocycles will be presented.
