Chemistry for Biomedical Advances: Methods, Molecules, Mechanisms, Medicines

Abstract: The role of chemistry in advancing biology and medicine has expanded significantly over the years.  The pursuit of new reactions and strategies for the synthesis and optimization of potential drug candidates is at the core of lead optimization and scale-up.  With the inception and growth of chemical biology as a driver for drug discovery, the use of chemical methodologies for elucidating the mechanisms of biological pathways have contributed to new therapeutic concepts. 

This seminar will highlight examples from my lab involving the key role of chemistry in the development of new methods, the design and synthesis of new bioactive molecules, and the elucidation of new biological mechanisms.  These efforts are essential for the collaborative discovery of new medicines for a variety of diseases and conditions, leading to new therapeutic advances in key areas, including inflammation, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases.
