“Commercial Aspects of Directed Evolution: A Journey Through “Applied Chemical Biology” Space”

Abstract.  Directed evolution of enzymes is a multi-disciplinary technology that has greatly expanded the use of biocatalysts in the chemical industry.  Going beyond the technology itself, this presentation will bridge technological opportunity with commercial reality. Examples of state-of-the-art directed evolution for the development of new pharmaceutical manufacturing routes as well as the discovery of new drug candidates, will be described. New scientific insights that were uncovered in some of these programs will be highlighted as well.
