Richard E. Dickerson Biochemistry Seminar Fund

Update! The department has committed to match all donations to this fund 2:1 until the end of January 2021. Over 130 donors have already contributed to the fund which has now reached $64,000 towards its goal of $100,000.

Honoring Professor Emeritus Richard Dickerson, a giant in structural biology, this new fund will provide resources for an enriched biochemistry seminar series at UCLA. To support this effort, the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry has committed to match all donations 2:1 for a limited time so that each contribution will be tripled!

Seaborg Symposium 2019

The UCLA Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is pleased to announce that on Saturday, November 23, 2019, the 2019 Glenn T. Seaborg Medal will be awarded to Dr. Paul Alivisatos, Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science & Engineering,  University of California, Berkeley. This annual celebration centers around the science of the year's Seaborg Medalist. For this year's event we will have an afternoon symposium with talks by Alivisatos and other prominent scientists. The symposium will take place in the afternoon at the UCLA California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) auditorium.A poster session by postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students will take place before the symposium in the CNSI lobby. Transforming Former Young Hall Library into a Collaborative Space

Thanks to generous support from alumni and friends, we are transforming our former library into an innovative space, enhancing the UCLA experience for thousands of Bruins. The Centennial Collaboratory will provide students and faculty with a fully-equipped study lounge, much-needed lecture hall, as well as group meeting and tutoring rooms—all of which will inspire collaboration and help students thrive.

This is a special opportunity to take your place among your friends and classmates by naming a molecule on the highly visible donor wall. Gifts of $10,000, $25,000 and $50,000 will be unveiled on molecules during the ribbon cutting ceremony this Winter. This donor wall of molecules will be a visual representation of the many Bruins and friends who come together to make the department strong.  Join us in this exciting collaborative project!   Give now.

To learn more, or to arrange to see the space in person, please contact Joy Kruger, Assistant Director of Development at (310) 206-8023 or jkruger@support.ucla.edu. Read our news article about this project here.

Paul D. Boyer Teacher Scholar Fund

In 2016, the UCLA Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry established the Paul D. Boyer Teacher-Scholar position to honor Professor Boyer's contributions to science, UCLA, and the world. Each year, we review applications from around the globe and select one recent Ph.D. graduate as the Paul D. Boyer Teacher-Scholar. Our Boyer Teacher-Scholars conduct cutting-edge postdoctoral research under a faculty member and also teach undergrads who are passionate about chemistry and biochemistry. Donations to the Paul D. Boyer Teacher-Scholar Fund will support postdoctoral research of the Boyer Teacher-Scholar and will also allow opportunities for scientific travel (e.g. conferences). For more information about how to contribute, click here.

UCLA Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry Paul Boyer passed away on June 2, 2018 at age 99, leaving the legacy of winning the 1997 Nobel prize in Chemistry.  Read more about his life and contributions.»
