SMACS Journal Club with Dr. Stacie Nakamoto

Thu, Feb 2 6:00pm to 7:30pm
Young Hall 2033
Speaker Dr. Stacie Nakamoto
Hosted by
Maybe you're a freshman or sophomore and keep hearing the term "academic literature" tossed around by your professors without ever actually being exposed to it. Perhaps you attempted to read through a research paper once or twice, but were overwhelmed by the language and format of the darn thing and felt as if you might as well have been trying to decipher hieroglyphics. Or maybe you're even an upperclassman who's worked with scientific literature in your upper division coursework, but want to refine your comprehension and presentation skills. Or maybe you just want to meet one of the coolest instructors in the department. If any of the above applies to you, COME TO JOURNAL CLUB!
UCLA Biochemistry instructor, Dr. Stacie Nakamoto will walk you through techniques to critically read, analyze, and present research papers in two 1.5 hr sessions, on 2/2/17 and 2/9/17 both at 6 PM in Young Hall 2033.
How is this going to work?
+We will post the paper in the event a few days before the first session. Participants are encouraged to skim over the paper to get familiar with the topic, but this is by no means mandatory.
+ On 2/2, Dr. Nakamoto will discuss methods for reading and analyzing the paper. Participants will be assigned to groups of 3 or 4 to present a certain section of the paper in the second session on 2/9 (i.e. group 1 will be assigned materials and methods, group 2 will be assigned figure 1, etc).
+ We will begin in-depth reading of the paper toward the end of the first session on 2/2. Groups will begin preparing their presentations.
+ Between 2/2 and 2/9 groups will collaborate to create slides with information pertinent to their assigned section (we will talk about this in a lot more detail on 2/2, don't worry!)
+ On 2/9, each group will present their section, supplemented by slides. Dr. Nakamoto will facilitate these presentations and help students understand concepts or methods that members had trouble with.
P.S. Dr. Nakamoto loves baking, so it is likely she will bring in some homemade goodies!
